Quick Guide: choose screen size, PPI and viewing distance

Step 1 — Define use & distance

Before obsessing over “4K vs 8K,” decide your primary use (office, gaming, editing, home theater) and your viewing distance. For a desk, 20–35 in (50–90 cm) is common; in a living room, 5–12 ft (1.5–3.5 m). Distance drives ideal diagonal and whether higher PPI pays off.

Step 2 — Pick an aspect ratio

16:9 dominates TV/video; 9:16 rules vertical social; 21:9 is ultrawide/cinema; 4:5 and 1:1 are great for feeds. Use the Aspect Ratio Calculator to keep crops clean and on-brand.

Step 3 — Compute physical size & PPI

With the Screen Size Calculator, enter resolution + diagonal to get PPI, physical width×height and area. Same diagonal + higher resolution ⇒ higher PPI ⇒ sharper at close range.

PPI = √(W² + H²) ÷ Diagonal (in)

Step 4 — FOV rules for TV/projector

For balanced immersion, estimate distance by FOV using the TV tool: 30° feels cinematic/relaxed; 40° feels more immersive; a practical middle ground is ~36°.

Distance ≈ (Screen width ÷ 2) ÷ tan(FOV ÷ 2)

Glossary

TermDefinition
PPIPixels per inch; higher PPI = sharper at the same distance.
DPIDots per inch in print. Don’t confuse with PPI (display).
Aspect ratioWidth:height proportion (e.g., 16:9, 4:5, 1:1).
FOVField of view in degrees; drives immersion and comfortable seating distance.

Extended FAQs

What distance for a 65″ 4K TV?

At 16:9, 65″ is comfortable around ~2.5 m (30°) and highly immersive near ~1.9 m (40°). With true 4K content you can sit a bit closer without seeing pixels.

Is 21:9 ultrawide good for productivity?

21:9 gives more usable width and fewer window swaps. Make sure your apps support the ratio, and adjust your seating to a comfortable FOV.

How do I convert pixels to centimeters for print?

Use Utilities: enter pixels and DPI → get exact inches and centimeters.
